For a new resident, the UK driving licence system can seem confusing at first. This guide structures the essentials.
The first 30 days
Establish and document the date you became a UK resident, and check in parallel whether your home country is on the DVLA's designated countries list. This shapes the rest of your timeline.
Months 1 to 3
- Arrange a translation or International Driving Permit if needed
- Prepare your application for GOV.UK or by post
- If required, book your theory and practical tests
Months 4 to 12
Submit your complete application well ahead of the 12-month deadline. For countries requiring authenticity checks, it is wise to apply within the first few months.
After the exchange
Keep copies of everything you submitted and check the validity period of your new GB licence, particularly in relation to your visa status.
