Relocating to the UK as a working expat involves a number of administrative steps, and sorting out your driving licence is one of the most important.

Step 1: Establish your residency

The date you become a UK resident starts your 12-month countdown. Keep records confirming this date, such as tenancy agreements or employment start dates.

Step 2: Check your licence's status

Check whether your country of origin is on the DVLA's designated countries list. This determines whether a test will be required.

Step 3: Arrange translation if needed

If your licence is not in English, you will usually need an official translation or an International Driving Permit to accompany your application.

Step 4: Apply through GOV.UK or by post

  • Have all original documents ready
  • A recent passport-style photo
  • Proof of identity and UK address

Step 5: Wait for processing

Depending on your country of origin, the DVLA may need to verify your licence's authenticity, which can extend processing times. Build in this buffer, especially if you rely on a vehicle for work.
